Abstract

AIM: To study the haemoglobin value in a dental Institution based population and to correlate the alterations in the value among people of various age group, sex and dental diseases.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 130 haemoglobin values were collected from the out patient population of Saveetha Dental College, Chennai, India for a period of 3months and analysed for the alterations in the value among people of various age group, sex and dental diseases.

BACKGROUND: With increasing age, people tend to develop more systemic diseases and oral health problems. Patients visiting dental clinics may have systemic medical condition and are on medication or without medication. Many of these systemic conditions have manifestations in the oral cavity, among which haemoglobin alterations serves to be the common condition affecting people of all age irrespective of male or female.

REASON: The alterations in the haemoglobin value is considered to be significant in any dental practice. There is little information regarding the relative frequency of these alterations and it's correlation with the age, sex and dental diseases among the Indian population.

Abstract

AIM: To analyse the knowledge of hospital related warning symbols among post graduate dental students in saveetha dental college. OBJECTIVE: The comparative study concentrates on pre and post training program among postgraduate dental students to test their knowledge on hospital related warning symbols. BACKGROUND: Hospital safety signs are the main means of communicating health and safety information. There are specific colors, shape and patten of the safety signs. They include the use of illuminated signs and hand signals . These symbols are critical to understand without the prime knowledge . It can prevent spread of communicable and radiation hazards. REASON: It is done to enhance the knowledge about the various warning symbols used in the hospitals.

Abstract

Aim and Objective: This study was done to compare the conventional notes and popplet notes for learning pathology among II year BDS students in Saveetha Dental College. Background: New methods are used to improve the standard of education. Pathology is a versatile subject and the concepts are hard to understand. Popplet helps in effective education and teaching. It interprets concepts in a better way, facilitates learning and improves the performance. Materials and Method: A total of 27 students were given conventional notes to learn and test was conducted and assessed. The same students were given popplet notes to learn and test was conducted and assessed. The results were compared to find the efficacy of two methods. Result: 70.3% of the students passed the test when they used conventional notes while 88.8% of the students passed the test when they used popplet notes for learning. Conclusion: Popplet notes simplifies the content, has the ability to insert images and the app can be installed free of cost. Students showed keen interest on using popplet notes than conventional notes. Using popplet notes is more effective than conventional notes.

Abstract

Introduction: Radiation can be defined as an emission of energy. Radiations like X-rays, gamma rays, and charged particles are used for cancer treatment. Radiation therapy inhibits the ability of the cancer cells to grow and divide, thus slowing their growth and killing them. Radiation therapy is given in curative or palliative intents. Palliative treatments are not intended to cure. They are given to the patients with advanced stage of cancers to reduce the symptoms and suffering caused by cancer. Exposure to ionizing radiation can cause changes in normal blood cell nature. Anemia is a common complication of myelosuppressive chemotherapy. These types of anemia are treated with repeated blood transfusions. The reduction in the leucocyte count is treated with Colony Stimulating Factors. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two cancer positive patients who underwent palliative radiotherapy for five fractions were included in this study. Complete blood count reports were collected from the clinical lab. RBC count of the sample population was noted and compared before and after radiotherapy. Results were analyzed statistically. Results: Results of the comparison between the RBC counts before and after the first fraction of the radiotherapy showed that there was no significant change. As the fractions of radiotherapy increased the RBC count showed a significant reduction which was statistically also significant. Males showed an RBC count reduction after the completion of radiotherapy than the females. Conclusion: In conclusion, a routine serial blood count determination during the entire course of palliative radiation showed a significant effect on RBC count. Though the advanced radiotherapy technologies were followed, the effect of radiation in the human body is still continuing at a lower level and insists the radiotherapist that a follow-up blood examinations is must for all the cancer patients who are under chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Abstract

Aim: To assess the efficacy of liquid paraffin as a rehydrant for air dried buccal smear based on the nuclear and cytoplasmic details. Background: Buccal smear is useful for diagnosing Malignancy, Fungal infection, Viral infection and Vesicullobullous dermatoses. The routine practice is to wetfixthe smear and send them to the laboratory for staining and evaluation by a cytopathologist. But drying of smears is inevitable, especially when the aspirate is less and when there is improper fixation. This can cause drying artifacts. An alternative method for overcoming this problem is intentional air drying followed by rehydration. Many rehydrants have been experimented upon. The most common rehydrant being saline. The present study is done to check the efficacy of liquid paraffin as a rehydrant. Material and methods: 2 sets of 20 buccal smears were collected from the patients. One set air dried for 24 hours and the other wet fixed. Conventional pap staining was then carried out. The slides were examined by two observers for preservation of Nuclear and cytoplasmic details based on the semi quantitative scoring system. Results: Excellent nuclear details were seen in 45% of air dried smear compared to 25%in routine wet fixation. The cytoplasmic details of air dried smear and routine wet fixed smear was the same. Conclusion: Liquid paraffin as a rehydrant has shown promising results and the nuclear details were found to marginally better than in routine wet fixed smear. Air dried buccal smears can be used in routine practice especially in rural areas where there is limited access to laboratories and for mass screening.
